Man convicted of murdering London police officer

LONDON, Kentucky (WYMT) – A man convicted in the death of a police officer in southern Kentucky is now set to receive his sentence.

Casey Byrd was convicted by a Warren County jury earlier this month of murder, driving under the influence and other charges in connection with the October 2022 death of London police Sergeant Logan Medlock.

Byrd's sentencing was scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday in Laurel Circuit Court. His trial was held in Bowling Green, but the final leg of his trial will take place in London.

A jury deliberated for nearly seven hours on August 8 before unanimously returning guilty verdicts in Byrd's trial on murder, driving under the influence of alcohol and other charges.

Byrd testified at the trial, telling the courtroom that after a night of drinking, he planned to spend the night at a friend's house, but he received a message from a woman he wanted to meet and decided to drive to her house instead.

There was evidence that he was travelling at twice the speed limit of 35 miles per hour. There was also evidence that he ran a red light before crashing into Sergeant Logan Medlock's patrol car shortly after he began his shift.

Medlock was known for stopping drunk drivers, and before he left that night he even said he hoped to find another one.

The jury recommended a murder charge of 20 years in prison and the judge will determine the final sentence on Monday.

Byrd has been incarcerated at the Laurel County Correctional Center since his indictment in the case.

The trial took place in Bowling Green because the people of Laurel County were very well informed about the case.
