The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday said it had found extensive evidence in its corruption probe against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, in which a 31-year-old junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered.

“There are a lot,” a CBI official was quoted as saying by ANI.

Earlier, CBI officials had searched the premises of Ghosh, former MSVP Sanjay Vashisth and 13 others in and around Kolkata as part of their investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the institute.

Here are the most important news related to the Kolkata rape and murder case:

1. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) criticised the CBI for its progress in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital murder case. “The rape and murder case needs to be solved quickly. So far there has been only one arrest and that too by the Kolkata police. What is the CBI doing? While the investigation drags on, politics is taking control,” TMC leader Kunal Ghosh told ANI.

2. Sanjoy Roy, the main accused in the Kolkata murder case, was subjected to a lie detector test at the Presidency Jail in Kolkata where he is being held. Four people, including former school principal Sandip Ghosh, were subjected to the lie detector test on Saturday, officials told PTI.

3. The opposition BJP in West Bengal has decided to shut down the West Bengal Commission of Women on August 28.

“On August 29, we will protest in front of the Chief Minister's office in all districts demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee… We will continue our protests… An inquiry must be launched against the West Bengal Health Minister. Mamata Banerjee's phone must be seized and an inquiry must be launched,” Union Minister and West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar told ANI.

4. A teacher from Alipurduar district in West Bengal, who was awarded the Banga Ratna Award by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2019, told ANI that he would return the award due to the state government's response to the rape and murder case.

5. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at an event in Maharashtra, termed crimes against women an “unforgivable sin”. “The message should go from the top down. This sin is unforgivable. Governments come and go, but protecting the life and dignity of women is a great responsibility of all of us, both as a society and as a government,” the Prime Minister said.
