It wouldn't be a typical training camp or preseason for the San Francisco 49ers if there wasn't competition for the quarterback position.
This year, it was about seeing who would be the replacement for Brock Purdy. The 49ers signed Joshua Dobbs as a free agent presumably to be just that. However, it's not the 49ers' style to give away spots. Dobbs was brought in to try and win that spot from Brandon Allen.
Allen has already played one season with the 49ers, so he had an advantage in practice. His familiarity with the offense made him seem calmer, and he didn't look too bad in the preseason. But Dobbs himself made a strong case in these games.
It has to be Dobbs. The 49ers signed him for that purpose and he proved it in the preseason. Arguably his best game was the second preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. He showed playmaking skills by starting with the ball as a runner or running around to find an open receiver.
Dobbs also showed he can operate well out of the pocket. He can play both inside and outside the offensive structure. Ultimately, Dobbs showed that the 49ers are in good hands with him if he ever needs to start a few games. The same cannot be said for Allen. It's not that Allen was bad. He was decent, if not better than decent.
But Dobbs brings playmaking skills to the 49ers offense that Allen can't. He's also started a lot of games and knows how to step in. He's the man who should be Purdy's direct replacement this season.
