“I don’t feel like anything is missing”

Colin Farrell stars in the upcoming HBO series.

Make no mistake: Max's upcoming series The Penguina spin-off of the 2022 film The Batmanis the story of the title character, once again played by Colin Farrell. It is the story of Oswald Cobblepot, not Bruce Wayne.

There will be no Batman cameo, The Penguin The makers have confirmed it.

“I don’t feel like there’s anything fundamental missing,” said Matt Reeves, the director The Batman and is executive producer of the new series, said in a new interview with Special effects Magazine. “I feel like it's an extension of what's fundamentally there. We know this is Batman's world.”

“They're going in a different direction,” Reeves said. “So the specter of Batman is there. The specter of the Riddler is there. The specter of everything that happens in the last movie is there. It shapes it. And that's where we start.”

Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne/Batman in Reeves' atmospheric superhero film and its highly anticipated sequel Batman – Part IIRelease date expected on October 2, 2026.

The Penguin Head writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc said she understands that people want Batman.

“I think it has a very different effect,” she told the magazine. “Matt's films are shot through the lens of Batman, so you're up high looking down on the city. It's a different perspective. With Oz, you're in the city streets, in the dust, dirt and grime. He's looking up and trying to fight his way up.”

Reeves and his producing partner Dylan Clark have envisioned a universe of films and shows spinning out of the film, beginning with a sequel in 2026. The Batman.

Last month, Farrell told EW that he was looking forward to delving deeper into the people, places and events that shaped his dark character in a television series.

“I loved the role in the Batman movie and the idea that we have eight hours to really delve into the psychology and backstory of this character,” Farrell said. “The backstory plays a big part in the TV series.”

The Penguin Premieres in September on HBO and Max.
